Rap point 2

Program and planning for Rap point 2

Wilfrid Gordon’s ‘… favourite person of all was Miss Nancy Alison Delacourt Cooper because she had four names just as he did’.

a) Who is your favourite person in the story? Why?

b) The author, Mem Fox and illustrator, Julie Vivas, have used words and illustrations together to help us understand what is special about each person. Use their clues in the book to write a description of your favourite person.

Upload your description to the rap blog. Include your reasons for choosing this particular character. Your class might wish to respond to comments from other rappers on the blog.

Bonus activity: Add some descriptive words for Wilfrid’s elderly friends on the new wiki page!

    Hi fellow Wilfrid Rappers

What an exciting rap task we have this week. Who is your class’ / group’s favourite character and why? You will need to look closely at both Mem Fox’s text and Julie Vivas’ beautiful illustrations before making your class decision. You can be little “rap detectives”! You will probably have to take a class vote – will there be a clear winner or will there be several popular characters?

I wonder if we will all choose the same character or a range of characters? I can’t wait to read your responses.

    Happy rapping everyone!

    Hi rappers!
We voted for our favourite Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge characters.
    Here are the results:
    Miss Nancy 6
    Wilfrid Gordon 2
    Mrs Jordan 1
    Mr Hosking 2
    Miss Mitchell 1
    Mr Tippett 4
    Mr Drysdale 2

Do you know who our favourite character is?

Connor says: We like this book.
Zoe says: I like it when Wilfrid Gordon gives Miss Nancy all the things.
Brianna says:This is a fun book.
We all like the part where Miss Nancy’s sister laughs with porridge in her mouth!!!

We all agree that this is a good book.

We are loving this story so much!

1/2L voted for Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge as their favourite character from the book and this surprised Miss Lark!

We chose Wilfrid because he looks funny and cute in the pictures and he was very kind to help Miss Nancy.

Here is our description of Wilfrid …….. he is a caring, young boy who likes to talk (a bit of a chatterbox) and help others. He has red, spiky hair and wears shorts and a t-shirt. (He is not a “Harry Highpants” like Mr Drysdale!) He is active and energetic as he rides a skateboard and is always doing something outside. He asks a lot of questions and we think he is very clever.

Looking forward to seeing who your votes are for and why! Thanks for helping us Mrs Scheffers!

  4.   bluesearappers Says:

Our favourite character in the story was Mr Tippett because lots of children in our class enjoy playing cricket and some children have been to see the big cricket finals like India versus Australia. One boy in our class even saw the streaker at that match!

Mr Tippett looks more active than the other characters in the story. He stands very tall and has long legs. He wears shoes rather than slippers like the other characters. Perhaps this is an indication that he goes outside a lot. We can see he is crazy about cricket because he uses a broomstick for a bat, wears the Australian green and gold sporting colours and has a baggy green cap. Perhaps he was once a famous cricketer and he may even have known Sir Donald Bradman.

  5.   bellyblogger Says:

    Hi all,
2H took a vote and decided that Wilfid was our favourite character from the book. When we read the book we saw Wilfrid being really kind to the older people in the nursing home. He helped Miss Nancy by finding her memory and spent his own play time with the elderly people.

We decided that this was very thoughtful because they probably don’t get many visitors, especially children. We also decided that Wilfrid was funny, because he curiously asked strange questions and kind because in the pictures he always had a big grin on his face and his eyes were scrunched up like they are when you feel happy.

    See you later alligator
    2H

  6.   bellyblogger Says:

Our class 2/3K chose Mr Tippett as our favourite character in the story.
Most of the boys chose Mr Tippett in our vote because he is crazy about cricket like we are.

From the picture we found Mr Tippett carries a broom for a bat, he has a green and yellow (gold) dressing gown and a baggy hat. We think this might be like the Australian cricket player.

We think he looks funny but he can also be sad. In the writing we find out out Mr Tippett has memories that make him feel sad.

We like Mr Tippett because sometimes we feel happy and crazy and sometime we feel sad.

Thank you for reading our post

  7.   glenhavenrappers Says:

We chose Miss Nancy because she has a kind, smiley face.

Miss Nancy is the second main character, so she is important in the story. Miss Nancy listens very well when Wilfrid tells her secrets. We thought she had two big brothers and a little sister. One brother never came back from the war. She likes nature (birds eggs and the beach)

Miss Nancy hadn’t lost her memories because Wilfrid brought them back with all the things he brought to show her.

  8.   nowrarappers Says:

1J chose Wilfred as their favourite character.
    Here is our description.
He is a small boy who told Miss Nancy all his secrets. He is curious because he asks lots of questions. He is friendly to everyone and he likes old people. He keeps souvenirs and likes animals. Miss Nancy thought he was ‘dear and strange.’

  9.   nowrarappers Says:

2A voted for Miss Mitchell as their favourite character.

Miss Mitchell is a very old woman who has light skin and short, grey hair.
She walks diffrertly to other people. She walks with a bent over back with a wooden stick.
She wears her pyjamas everywhere which looks like a colourful dress and jumper. She wears her hat everywhere and sandal-like shoes.
She is a very nice lady who is friendly and happy. We know she is happy because she said a memory is something that makes you laugh.

    Hi Rappers,

We are enjoying reading Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge. We took a vote to decide which our favourite character is. We love all of the characters in the book and the vote was very close but our favourite character is Miss Nancy because she is kind and wears a rainbow dress.

She is one of the book’s main characters which makes her a very important part of the story. We also like the way she finds her memories. Miss Nancy looks friendly because of her rosie cheeks, wavy hair and comfortable, colourful clothes. We like her grey, woolly hair which reminds us of a sheep. She is 96 years old and reminds us of our Grandmas.

We hope you can decide which your favourite character is. Happy rapping.

    Hi rappers,

We think that Mem Fox and Julie Vivas have created some interesting characters in this book. When we voted for our favourite character, we had a tie! Mr Tippett and Wilfrid Gordon were the most popular characters in our class.

Mr Tippett is a funny character and we like that he is ‘crazy’ about cricket! Quite a few of us like cricket too and some of us might even like cricket even more than Mr Tippett!

Wilfrid Gordon is cute and cheeky. He is full of life and he is a bit like a hero, saving a memory!

  12.   penrithpsrappers Says:

    Hello rappers!

We listed the characters in “Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge” and voted, trying not to open our eyes to see who was voting for who. Our results were:

    Wilfrid: 7 votes
    Mr Hosking: 1 vote
    Miss Nancy: 4 votes
    Mr Tippett: 2 votes.

No one else received any votes.

Things we noticed about Wilfrid: he likes riding his skateboard, can be funny, and thinks his football is precious. He is a saviour, a special boy who looks after his favourite things. His favourite colour is probably blue.

The written text by Mem Fox tells us that Wilfrid is not old. He lives next door to the retirement home. He has four names. Wilfrid is very polite, as he calls Nancy “Miss Nancy”.

The illustrations by Julie Vivas tells us that Wilfrid makes lots of mess in his back yard. He enjoys playing on monkey bars. Wilfrid’s lawn has no bindis because he often runs around with no shoes. He wears sneakers when riding his skateboard, which is sensible.

When he is on the couch with Mum and Dad, Wilfrid puts his feet up between them. Dad probably says to him, “Hey! You’re blocking our kiss here!”

We noticed that Dad is holding Wilfrid’s teddy. Maybe Wilfrid gets scared of the dark, or when he is thinking about Mr Hosking’s scary stories? The teddy bear would stop Wilfrid from having bad dreams.

We noticed today that Miranda North PS put white sugar cubes on the wiki page. They are just like the ones that Wilfrid is stacking up in the book, when he’s talking to Mrs Jordan. We had never seen sugar cubes before reading “Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge”. We thought he was building a tower with Base Ten blocks!

One of us noticed that it looks like Wilfrid will soon have a little brother or sister. There is a clue on one of the pages of the story.

  13.   bellyblogger Says:

    Hi

Our class 1P have been reading Mem Fox books. We found Mem Fox’s website and she talked all about her books and the characters.

She says Wilfrid Gordon’s name is her dad’s full name. Mem visited her grandfather in an old people’s home which is where she got the idea and her grandfather was 96 when he died, which is why she made Miss Nancy 96.

Most of the characters are named after people the author knows – Miss Nancy’s name is from her mum, nan and 2 sisters. Mrs Morgan lived next door to Mem and Mr Hosking was a person the writer worked with.

    Hi fellow rappers,

2P took a vote to decide who our favourite character was. It was close, but Miss Nancy was the winner with 10 votes. There were many reasons for choosing Miss Nancy:
Erin says because she has 4 names just like her
Brandon says because her age is the same as Mem Fox’s grandfather
Keana says because of her colourful dress
Katelyn says because she shares the memories of her life at the end
Anushi says because she is kind and friendly.

Miss Nancy is a very important character in the book. Our description of her is that she lost her memory and she is 96 years old. She wears a yellow petticoat, a colourful dress, pink socks and white slippers. She has thick grey hair (like Mrs Scheffers) and she has rosy cheeks. We enjoyed looking at the book and pointing out special features about the characters from the illustrations.

Looking forward to reading your votes.

Here are some of the reasons the students gave for making Mr Tippett so popular

    *He’s crazy about cricket
*I like watching cricket and I think he would too
*He’s wearing an interesting hat and a smart knitted vest
*He used a broom as a cricket bat

Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge – 3 because of his tummy , his hair , and his kindnesss

Miss Nancy – 3 – because she is kind and her clothes look like she is going to the beach

Mrs Jordan – 6 – because she plays an organ, is kind and wears a colourful dress

Mr Tippett – 4 – because he liked cricket, wore his pyjamas and plays with a broom

Mr Hosking – 2 – because he looks funny in his clothes and he told scary stories

    Hello rappers

Miss Nancy and Mr Drysdale were the two favourites in our class. We think Miss Nancy is a happy old lady who loves to share secrets and play with Wilfrid. We loved all the beautiful colours that Julie Vivas used in Miss Nancy’s dress, they make her look cheerful. We loved Mr Drysdale who had a voice like a giant because he reminded us of the story we have been reading in class about Jack and the Beanstalk. Julie Vivas has made him look really big in the picture when he is telling Wilfrid that a memory is as precious as gold.

We have had such a busy week. 1E, 1/2C and 2H are replying together this week. We took class votes on our favourite characters and here are the results:

1E and 1/2C liked Miss Nancy best because she looks friendly and is Wilfrid’s special friend. Mrs Jordan came a very close second because lots of people like to listen to music.

2H liked Miss Nancy and Mr Tippett equally. Miss Nancy because she is friendly and talks to Wilfrid specially and Mr Tippett because he is crazy about cricket and so are lots of people at our school.

We are all busy now writing our descriptions and getting them ready to Blog.

    Hi fellow rappers,

2A decided that Miss Nancy was our favourite character by making a list of all the characters. Then we all voted for our favourite. Miss Nancy got the most votes. Mr Tippett was the 2nd favourite.

Miss Nancy is kind old lady who has lots of time to listen to Wilfrid’s secrets. She is an interesting person who has lost her memory and we feel sad for her just like Wilfrid does.

Miss Nancy is 96 years old, she is always smiling with rosy red cheeks. Her eyes are sparkly and she has wavy grey hair. Miss Nancy wears colourful dresses which make her look happy.
In the story we find out that she has had an interesting life that included adventures at her Auntie’s house and at the beach. She had a brother who died at war and she was very fond of her little sister.

We look forward to finding out about who your favourite characters are when we read the Wilfrid Blog next time.

We like Wilfrid the best because he is so active (climbing, riding his bike and skateboarding), helpful to everyone, kind, caring, smart, talented and really worked hard to help Miss Nancy find her memory. We think he would grow up to be a wonderful adult!

    Hello all the other rappers,

Our class enjoyed talking about all of the characters for rap point 2 this week. What did other rappers think?

We talked about all of the characters in Wilfrid Gordon and then voted for our favourite one. We had a problem though, when we counted our votes there were two characters with the same amount of votes, so we had to do another vote. Once we had the second vote we came up with a clear winner as to whom our favourite character is.

The character who was our second favourite was Miss Mitchell because we liked her happy face and bright dress. Let’s see if you can guess our favourite character. The character:
    • has spiky ginger hair
    • is very helpful
    • is very active
    • always asks lots of questions
    • is cute
    • has 4 names
    • is a small boy

If you haven’t figured it out already (although I’m sure you would have), our favourite character from the book is Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partrige.

I hope all the other rappers had as much fun choosing their favourite character as we did.

This week 1S looked at all the characters in the WGMP book, examined how Julie Vivas has illustrated the characters and read closely how Mem Fox described each one. It was a most interesting activity to get to know all the characters.

After a thorough discussion, we voted on the most popular or favourite character of 1S. Many of us thought that Mr. Hosking was the most interesting character in the book because he likes telling scary stories. He has spiky thin hair, bushy eyebrows and wears braces to hold his pants up. He looks like he is an animated story teller with the way he was illustrated with his long and skinny fingers moving in the air while he tells his stories. There are some in our class who likes telling scary stories just like Mr. Hosking.

It would be a curious thing to find out who among you also find Mr. Hosking as their class’ favourite character. We’ll be reading on……

The Happy rappers in 1H had a good look at all the characters and had interesting discussions about them. Our favourite character was Miss Nancy – but the vote was well spread among the characters.

We liked Miss Nancy as she is always smiling. We liked her colourful “rainbow” dress, and her rosy cheeks and also her bushy grey hair. Miss Nancy is 96 years old, which we said “wow!” to, when we read it. Miss Nancy has 4 names, just like Wilfrid. It was interesting reading about her memories when Wilfrid helped her get them back. Things were very different when she grew up. We decided we would definitely not wear boots to the beach!

  29.   thirrouligans1 Says:

2BH liked most of the characters – but especially Mr Tippett (many boys like playing cricket!) and Mr Hosking because they like to hear scary stories.

As we were looking at the illustrations more closely, we identified another of Wilfid’s possessions that we think is precious to him. Do you think you know what it is? This item features on several pages with Wilfrid.

  30.   penrithpsrappers Says:

    Hi everyone,

Believe it or not: when our group voted for a favourite character the winner was… the hen!

We liked the hen because she is on the cover (hiding under Miss Nancy’s chair) and she laid the warm egg that Wilfrid gave to Miss Nancy. The only other information about the chickens in the written text is that they live in a henhouse in Wilfrid’s backyard.

The illustrations tell us more about the hen. Her henhouse is near the monkey bars. You can see a corner of the chicken wire, which looks like it has broken. We think the hen visits the retirement home by going through the same hole in the fence as Wilfrid. We can see the hen pecking for food in the backyard. Chickens like to look for grass seeds and worms. The hen has brown feathers and a red comb. When Wilfrid takes the basket of memories to Miss Nancy, the hen follows Wilfrid.

We have named the hen Sneaky Chicky McDonald Partridge so that she has four names just like Wilfrid Gordon and Miss Nancy!

2B’s favourite character is Miss Nancy.

Miss Nancy has short, grey white hair. She is small. She wears pretty bright coloured dresses and she is ninety six years old. She has four names just like Wilfred.

She is a very sweet person because she listens to Wilfrid and shares secrets. She lost her memory and Wilfrid helped her find it.

She liked doing things outdoors when she was young.

  33.   thirrouligans1 Says:

Class 1V liked Mr Tippett and Miss Nancy the best – Miss Nancy just because she is old and likes to spend time with Wilfrid who is young.

We wondered whether the story was set in the past or in the present – particularly from looking at the illustrations on the opening pages. Wilfrid likes to play with his billycart and if you look at his bike, it looks old fashioned. We talked about why he would have an old bike…..Sian thought that perhaps it might have belonged to Wilfrid’s Mum or Dad. What do you think?

We agreed that looking closely at the illustrations in a picture book sure gives us extra information about the book!

    Happy rapping!

  34.   newtownrappers Says:

    Hi Rappers,

This week we voted for our favourite character. It was very close. Our two favourite characters were Mr Hosking who got 10 votes and Miss Nancy who got 9 votes.

We liked Mr Hosking because he tells scary stories. He seems to enjoy telling Wilfrid the scary stories. Maybe he is an experienced storyteller. In the text he told Wilfrid that a memory was “something from long ago me lad.” He may start his stories like this.

We liked the illustrations and thought Mr Hosking looked scary. He has short grey hair, stripey socks and high pants. He does funny poses when telling stories and may make funny noises too. He is always sitting in his chair, which tells us he may be sitting inside the nursing home most of the time.

When looking at the illustrations of Mr Hosking it makes you want to listen, give eye contact, be quiet, imagine, think and be interested.

Most of the girls like Miss Jordan because we enjoy singing and dancing and playing the recorder. We think Miss Jordan must also like music as she enjoys playing the organ. We also liked her clothes especially because they are a mixture of pink and purple.

    Hello rappers!

We took a vote for our favourite characters. Each character had one vote, except for Mr Hosking who had three votes, so we chose him as the character to write about.

Mr Hosking loves to tell scary stories! The written text by Mem Fox also tells us that Wilfrid likes to listen to his stories. Mr Hosking calls Wilfrid “me lad”, which makes Mr Hosking sound like a pirate or a Scotsman.

The illustrations by Julie Vivas show us that Mr Hosking wears striped socks with his brown slippers. He wears a blue shirt like Wilfrid, and a second Tshirt underneath. Mr Hosking has very bushy eyebrows. He has spiky hair on his head (like our teacher librarian, Mr McLean). Mr Hosking also has long legs and a fat tummy. When he tells scary stories, Mr Hosking uses hand actions. He holds his hands up over his head like a bat. Maybe Mr Hosking tells stories about scary dinosaurs, vampires, ghosts, tigers and dragons.

Mr McLean used a whispering voice and some hand actions to say the scary poem called The Hairy Toe. At the end of the poem, when we were all listening very, very carefully, he told us the end of the narrative. We all got a big fright! We jumped out of our chairs and SCREAMED! We loved getting scared and it made us laugh and laugh.

Bradley likes Mrs Jordan because she plays music and Bradley likes music. Three children like listening to scary stories so their favourite is Mr Hosking. Two children like Mr Tippett because he is crazy about cricket and because of the way the writing rhymes. Seven think Mr Drysdale is so big and Zac thinks he looks nice and that makes him a favourite. Four children think Miss Nancy is their favourite because she finds her memory and is happy.

    Happy rapping

Our favourite person in the story is Wilfrid Gordon because he is always helpful and kind. Also he is the main character in the story. Wilfrid is a rather helpful person. He has restored Mrs Nancy’s memory and is friendly to all people. He is a kind person but sometimes he is a little mischievious.

  44.   manorvale4raps Says:

    Hello rappers

Today we had Grades 1/2 HB,KS and MM select their favourite characters.

Lots of children chose Wilfrid Gordon and Miss Nancy. They really liked these characters because they cared for each other, listened to each other and shared secrets.

We also had a large group who loved Mr Tippett because they also loved cricket.

  45.   sjppslibrary Says:

    Hello fellow rappers,

Our class voted for their favourite character and the results were surprising:
    Mrs Jordan 0
    Mr Hosking 0
    Mr Tippett 4
    Mrs Mitchell 0
    Mr Drysdale 0
    Miss Nancy 4
    Wilfrid 15

Our favourite character is Wilfrid Gordon because he is kind and helpful to the elderly people. Wilfrid is a young boy who likes to be active. He plays on the skateboard and on the monkey bars. He is a good listener and he treats the old people like friends.

We are learning a lot about memories by reading this book.

    Hello Wilfrid rappers,

Our group did some voting for the characters from “Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge” and here are our votes:

    Wilfrid: 6 votes
    Miss Nancy: 1 vote
    Mum: 2 votes.

We chose Wilfrid as the most popular character because: he is on almost every page; he is a smart, famous boy; he is polite to Miss Nancy; and he helped her to remember things.

The written text tells us that Wilfrid has four names. He knows lots of people in his street. His favourite person is Miss Nancy. Wilfrid keeps special memories in a box in his room.

Perhaps he collected the shells on a trip to the beach during the summer holidays. Maybe the puppet is homemade, or he bought it from the Royal Easter Show, the Australia Day celebrations at The Lakes, or the Penrith District Show. We don’t know if the medal from his grandfather is from the war or the Olympic Games, but we know that Wilfrid gets sad when he thinks about it, so maybe his grandfather has died.

We think that one of Wilfrid’s chores at home is to collect the eggs from the henhouse every day.

Why does Wilfrid think a football is “as precious as gold”? Mostly, footballs are old, wet, muddy and smelly. Maybe it is precious to Wilfrid because his footy coach gave it to him? Maybe it has a famous autograph on it. Wilfrid might sell his football on eBay and get lots of money!

The illustrations show us that Wilfrid likes colourful clothes but he often goes barefoot. He has orange coloured hair, so he is a redhead. Wilfrid likes riding skateboards, tricycles and billycarts.

Jimmy thinks that a better title for this book is “Miss Nancy has lost her memory”.

There are so many messages on this page! Well done everyone!

  47.   newtownrappers Says:

    Howdy everyone,

It was a close call for the newtownrappers’ vote. Miss Nancy got 9 votes, it was a hard decision because Julie Vivas’s illustrations of Miss Nancy give her a kind expression and she seems like such a warm and kind person. It was also nice to see Miss Nancy as a young girl playing with her sister.

However it was Mr Hosking’s scary stories that won us over. Mr Hosking was voted our favourite character. He got 10 votes. We like Mr Hosking because when he tells his stories it looks like he uses lots of expression. We think all the other characters might have heard his stories before because they are not paying very much attention to him, Mr Drysdale even falls asleep! Mr Tippett and Wilfrid Gordon seem to enjoy listening to him. Perhaps he is an old soldier telling war stories.

We like how c.c.p.s. rappers called Mr Drysdale ‘Harry Highpants.’ Mr Hosking is also a ‘Harry Highpants.’ His crazy, spiky hair makes him look like lots of fun.
Although we like to play cricket, Mr Tippett only got 1 vote.

We are enjoying rapping with you and hope you are having fun too. Catch up soon,

    farewell

    We took a vote too.

The boys all loved Mr Tippett. We thought that, the way he has been illustrated, it would be like he could pick up just about anything and pretend he was playing a cricket shot!

The girls loved Miss Nancy because she was kind and gentle to Wilfrid. She is old but she is gentle and warm.

We had a class vote and decided that Miss Nancy was our favourite character.

We like the way she is shown in the illustrations as a lovely old lady who is quite fancy. We like her colourful dresss, her red socks, her white shoes and her younger clothing whe she was only a girl, also. We noticed her grey hair, her rosy cheeks, that she was a bit chubby, and tall. We observed that she slouched in her cane chair, but that she was bright, colourful and rosy cheeked. Other clues we got were that she is well spoken, caring, kind and emotional.

My favourite character is Mr Hosking because he is like my grandpa. I like him when he tells me scary stories. It is great. When he finishes I fall asleep. (Diana 1/2O)

Our favourite characters do things we like. Special favourites are Mr Tippett and Mrs Jordan because we like cricket and keyboards. Many of us have grandparents who are a bit like the older characters. (All of 1/20)

  51.   werringtonrappers Says:

Our class had a vote to see who was our favourite character.

Miss Nancy was our favourite because we think it is pretty special to be 96 years old. We think she is beautiful in her colourful clothes. We liked how Wilfrid showed her some things to help her remember about her life. We loved the part where she remembered that she made her sister laugh with the puppet.

The second most popular character was Mr Tippett because he liked cricket so much and so do we.

    Werrington Rappers.

  52.   camberappers Says:

We chose Mr Tippett as our favourite person but we also like Miss Nancy, Mr Drysdale, Mrs Jordan and Wilfrid too.

We like Mr Tippett because lots of children in our class play cricket. Mr Tippett is old and crazy about cricket. He uses a broom as a cricket bat and we think he finds lots of things to use as cricket bats too.

    from 2B (we rule)

  53.   jindybats Says:

Jindybats like Mr Tippett the best because he plays cricket, the boys in our class think that is cool. We like him because he is active and we like his clothes too.

Our second favourite character is Miss Nancy because she is kind to Wilfrid and friendly. We like her name, her clothes and that she is good looking but not fancy.

Our next favourite is Mrs Jordan because she plays the organ and has black hair.

  54.   nowrarappers Says:

2Q’s favourite character is Mr Drysdale. He is a very big friendly old man. He has a voice like a giant but he isn’t scary. It is good that Mr Drysdale thinks that memories are special.

Mr Drysdale is a very tall man with a big tummy. He doesn’t worry about fashion because he wears very high pants and socks and sandals. Mr Drysdale has big ears and spiky hair like a monster. He looks one hundred years old but he is still the biggest in the book.

  55.   graysraps Says:

Miss Nancy Alison Delacourt Cooper was clearly our favourite character in the story with all of the kids voting for her. Our librarian Ms Annette voted for Mr Hosking, and Miss Gray voted for Mr Drysdale.

Miss Nancy was our favourite because:
    - She is a very kind and normal old lady
    - She looks friendly and always has a kind smile
    - It’s nice that Nancy takes the time to talk to the young Wilfrid.

  56.   rap3c Says:

Class 3C’s favourite character from the story was Mr Hosking. He is an older man who sits in a large wicker chair. Mr Hosking wears blue, stripy socks, a blue shirt and brownish colour trousers. His thin limbs and large tummy make him look like a spider. We think that he might be a Scottish man because he says, “me lad.”

Class 3G liked Mr Tippett best and we liked his green stripy jacket and bright pink socks. We loved the way his stomach pokes out and makes him look quite old. He is very stooped and we wondered if his memories that made him cry were from some cricket games he had lost.

Class 2E liked Wilfrid best as he was kind and friendly and we even thought he was a superstar. He is very thoughtful and funny as well. We liked his bright coloured clothes and his fat tummy as well as his spiky hair which is so curly and orange. We loved his skateboard and we thought he was rather active.

  57.   stmichaels Says:

    Year 2G says:
Miss Nancy is our favourite character because:
    1. she reminds us of our grandmothers
    2. because she is Wilfrid’s friend
    3. because she is a main character
    4. because she is old like my grandfather.

    Miss Nancy:
    is old
    cheerful
    friendly
    funny
    wears a colourful pretty dress
    wears an old fashioned dress
    is wearing socks and slippers
    has curly white hair.

    Year 2L says:
Our favourite character is Wilfrid Gordon because:
    1. he helped Miss Nancy find her memory
    2. his friends tell him lots of things
    3. he is kind and caring.

    Wilfrid Gordon:
is a kind and caring boy
    not very old, maybe 6
helped Miss Nancy find her memory
    active
    spiky hair
    thin
    short.

It seems we agree with lots of other schools with our choices.

  58.   kemblawarrakids Says:

    Hello Everyone,

The students from 1/2/3W agree with lots of other Rappers that Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge is their favourite character, but we like Miss Nancy too. The reasons they gave are:

    Because Wilfrid:
    * is a little boy
    * skates on his skateboard
    * helps Miss Nancy to get her memories back.

Laandi did a great picture of Wilfrid, on his skateboard, visiting Miss Nancy.

    Because Miss Nancy:
    * is a nice person
    * is a friend of Wilfrid
    * has a pretty dress
    * has a nice face.

Dom drew Miss Nancy in her colourful dress with a lovely hat on top of her grey hair.

  59.   warillanorthrappers Says:

    Dear Everyone,

Like many of the rest of you, Warillanorthrappers had lots of different opinions about a favourite character. We broke into smaller groups because we are such a BIG group all working together, so we’d be able to think and talk more easily. Sorry our reporting back is LONG!

Eight of us voted for Wilfrid as the favourite character. Some of the reasons are:
    * He helps the old people.
    * He cuddled Miss Nancy.

Six of us voted for Mr Tippett. Some of the reasons are:
    * We like the broom he uses instead of a cricket bat.
    * He has a funny name.

Two of us voted for Mr Drysdale as the favourite because:
    * He looks happy, tall and fat.
    * He said that memories are as precious as gold.

    Hi everyone,
We are having a great time doing the rap. We have talked a lot about the characters and we also took a vote for which one was our favourite. Here are our results:
    Mr Hosking – 1
    Mr. Drysdale – 4
    Miss Nancy – 1
    Mr. Tippett – 2
    Wilfrid – 13
    Miss Mitchell – 1
    Mrs Jordan – 1

Because Wilfrid had the most votes we had a discussion about what we liked about him.
Jarvys said he liked Wilfrid because he was a chatterbox – and he likes being a chatterbox too!
Many of us said we really liked him because he was the one who found the memories for Miss Nancy. Matthew decided Wilfrid was a lifesaver.
Jaye said Wilfrid was kind. Many of us said that we liked how he asked lots of questions. Phoebe said you become clever if you ask lots of questions, Alex said that’s how you learn.
Sally liked Wilfrid because he was curious…just like her. James thought Wilfrid was great because he knew exactly what to do to help.

    Hi you gorgeous rappers,

We in 1W, 2/4G and 2/6S discussed many of the interesting things about the characters in this book and finally decided that our favourite one is Miss Nancy – she got 12 votes. Wilfrid was a close second with 8 and then it was Mr Drysdale with 4.

Miss Nancy was the favourite because:
    * she wears white slippers and red socks
    * she found a special bird’s nest when she was young
    * she took off her boots at the beach and that is what we would do
    * it was sad that her brother never came back from the war
    * she had a little sister and some of us have little sisters.

Wow this is a great book!!

    Till next time. Rap ONNNNNN.

  62.   jindyseahorses Says:

    Hello rappers,

We have had a huge discussion about who is our favourite character in the book and we have decided that it just has to be Miss Mitchell.

We have a lovely Miss Mitchell at our school (who is much younger than the Miss Mitchell in the story) and she dressed up as the character and came to visit our classroom. She had on an old stripy shirt and she was using a walking stick which was really a big teacher’s ruler.

We all thought that she was very nice to do that for us, as she is always very busy.

These are the words that we came out with to describe the characters in the book.

Mrs Jordan – colourful and musical

Mr Hosking – a cool storyteller

Mr Tippett – funny and sporty

Mr Drysdale – loud and strong

Miss Mitchell – beautiful and cuddly

    See you next week.

  63.   peps2s Says:

    Hi everyone,

In our class most people voted for Miss Nancy because we thought she looked like a nice, kind person. Jasmin thought she looked very pretty, Amelia thought she looked very quiet and Leo thought it was very happy when she got her memory back. We also felt sorry for her because she had lost her memory and we thought that would be horrible.

Our second choice was Miss Mitchell. We thought that she looked small and cute and we loved the fact that she thought a memory was something that made you laugh because that’s what we like to do in our class.

  64.   sandraboddo Says:

    Hi everyone

We voted on our favourite character and it was very close in the results. Miss Nancy won by one vote and Mr Tippett came second.

Miss Nancy won because we liked the fact that she had four names just like Wilfrid. Did you know that our teacher has five names? We loved the fact that Miss Nancy started to get her memories back and because she starts Wilfrid on his journey in finding out about memory and what memories can be. We were excited by the fact that Miss Nancy was ninety-six yeas old; we all thought “WOW!”

We think that Miss Nancy was very lucky to know a person like Wilfrid who cares and enjoys visiting with the old people.

    Hi Rappers,

2K (International School, Ho Chi Minh City) has been very busy but luckily, on Friday afternoon, the group was able to get together to discuss Rap Point 2. They did this with very little help from Ms Weeks and came up with an agreement for the group. 2K’s favourite character is Wilfrid.

We like him because he found Miss Nancy’s memory, he is clever, he asked everyone in the home about what a memory was, he is honest, he thinks about Miss Nancy and he has good thinking. He is caring and friendly. The group liked Wilfrid’s clothes – they are very colourful.
